Abstract:
Hans Driesch is regarded as the father of the neovitalistic viewpoint. The idea of entelechy is the central tenet of the neovitalistic viewpoint. Aristotle held some beliefs that, in essence, are similar to vitalism. These beliefs include the philosopher’s emphasis on non-material causes in biological development, his assertion that an organism cannot be broken down into its component parts and his claim that teleology (entelechy) has a special causal significance. The most contentious idea in vitalism was perhaps the idea of entelechy.
