Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine (ATHM): Women’s health is no longer a taboo subject. From my research, there are several myths about menopause.
Alyssa Dweck, MS, MD, FACOG, MSCP: You are correct. Menopause is now top of mind for so many women and for many healthcare providers, who were frankly never that interested in the subject matter, or perhaps not well educated in it. I think that there’s really a major change unfolding regarding interest in the menopause space.
ATHM: The first myth is hormone replacement therapy is dangerous.
Dr. Dweck: For the past 20+ years, and as a result of the original interpretation of the WHI (Women’s Health Initiative) study data, menopause hormone therapy, or MHT, or even just simply HT, was thought of as substantially risky with use posing significant increase in breast cancer risk, cardiovascular risk and blood clot. Thoughtful reinterpretation of data since that time, suggests HT benefits far outweigh risks when age, perimenopause/menopause timing, administration route and formulation are taken into account.
In fact, the FDA recently removed the black box warnings on the package label for estrogen containing drugs for menopause to reflect this safety data. The only boxed warning that remains is for uterine cancer risk for those taking unopposed systemic estrogen, in those who have a uterus, in which case progesterone is advised along with estrogen to mitigate this risk.
